Construction Entrance Requirements: What Makes a Compliant Entrance

Why Entrances Matter So Much
Sediment tracked onto public roads by construction vehicles is one of the most visible forms of stormwater non-compliance — visible to inspectors, neighbors, and anyone driving past the site — and one of the easiest violations to document.
The Fabric Base
A geotextile separation layer beneath the aggregate keeps the rock from working its way down into the native subgrade under vehicle load. Without it, the aggregate gradually disappears into the soil and the entrance stops functioning, often within weeks on a high-traffic site.
Aggregate Sizing and Entrance Length
Aggregate depth and entrance length need to be sized to the site's actual traffic load and soil conditions — a short, thin entrance on a high-traffic site will be overwhelmed quickly, while the same entrance might hold up fine on a low-traffic residential lot.
Ongoing Maintenance
Entrances need periodic top-dressing and regrading as aggregate becomes embedded with site soil over time — a construction entrance is a maintained BMP throughout the project, not a one-time installation that's checked off and forgotten.
