Post-Rain Inspection Checklist for Construction Sites
A complete post-rain inspection covers every BMP category on site, not just the most visible perimeter controls.
Perimeter Controls
Check silt fence and super silt fence for undermining, overtopping, tears, and end-around bypass. Note sediment accumulation height against the one-third to one-half cleanout threshold.
Inlet Protection
Inspect every storm drain inlet downstream of disturbed soil for blockage, bypass, or sediment buildup that's reducing capacity. A clogged inlet protection device can cause localized flooding even while technically still 'in place.'
Construction Entrances
Check for visible sediment tracking onto adjacent roads and whether aggregate depth has been reduced by embedment into the subgrade.
Sediment Basins and Traps
Verify remaining capacity hasn't been substantially reduced by accumulated sediment, and check outlet structures for blockage.
Stabilization Status
Confirm that any area reaching final grade since the last inspection has been stabilized within the required timeframe, and that temporary stabilization on active areas hasn't washed out.
Documentation
Record findings in writing with photos, log any corrective actions taken or needed, and track each item through to resolution and re-inspection — a verbal walk-through with no paper trail doesn't satisfy SWPPP recordkeeping expectations.
