When Is Super Silt Fence Required?

Super silt fence is typically called for where standard fence has already failed, or where slope, flow, or receiving water sensitivity exceeds what standard fence can reliably handle.

Repeated Standard Fence Failure

If standard silt fence has failed more than once at the same location despite correct installation, that's a strong signal the location needs more structural capacity than fabric and stakes alone can provide — which is exactly what the chain-link or welded-wire backing in super silt fence adds.

Long or Steep Slopes

Longer slopes concentrate more flow volume by the time runoff reaches the base, and steeper slopes increase flow velocity. Both increase the hydrostatic load on a sediment barrier beyond what standard fence is typically rated to handle.

Proximity to Sensitive Receiving Waters

Sites adjacent to wetlands, Outstanding Florida Waters, or other sensitive receiving waters often warrant — or may be required by the permitting authority to use — enhanced protection given the lower tolerance for any sediment discharge reaching these systems.
